About University of Indonesia
Established in 1849, the University of Indonesia is the oldest state-run university in Indonesia with campuses in Depok, West Java and Jakarta.
The main campus in Depok now houses the majority of the faculties, including mathematics and natural sciences, humanities, economics and many more.
In 2007, the university underwent substantial reform and the university now boasts one of the largest libraries in Southeast Asia, accommodating over 20,000 visitors per day and holding approximately 1.5 million books. The library, which was designed with sustainability in mind, powers itself with solar energy.
In 2008, the university won the Indonesia ICT award for the smart campus with best content and application.
The university’s main campus in Depok was built during the mid-1980s when the university modernised. Just 25 per cent of the 320 hectares is used for academic, research and student activities, while 75 per cent is used to maintain the surrounding forest.
There is a mosque, located inside the Salemba campus, which was designed with a vision to produce modern Muslims who have both faith and scientific thought, capable of both practicing religion but also to solve religious problems.
The university has hosted the Indonesian Robot Contest six times due to its comprehensive facilities and student activities.
In an attempt to decrease the number of vehicles in the campus, over 20 kilometres of bicycle paths have been created, while shuttle buses are also provided. The university provides many sports facilities including a football stadium, athletic track, hockey field and tennis courts.
Notable alumni include Sri Mulyani Indrawati, an Indonesian economist who has been minister of finance of Indonesia since 2016, Nagita Slavina Mariana Tengker, an Indonesian actor, television host, film producer, and singer, and Soe Hok Gie, an activist who served as the inspiration for a 2005 film, Gie.
